Brampton at a glance
Peel Region’s court town, and a city of second units
Brampton is a city in Peel Region and the seat of its Superior Court. A few local facts matter for buyers, families and estate trustees alike.

Additional units must be registered
The City says that all additional residential units must be registered, including older second units, after a building permit, and that a property can have up to three units in total. An unregistered unit becomes the buyer’s problem on closing, and the estate trustee’s problem when an owner dies, so it is worth checking early. Our Brampton real estate page explains the checks.
The Peel courthouse
Probate for anyone who lived in Brampton or Mississauga is filed with the Superior Court of Justice at the Brampton courthouse, 7755 Hurontario Street, by email where possible.
Land transfer tax
Brampton has no municipal land transfer tax, so a purchase pays Ontario’s tax only: about $18,475 on a $1,100,000 home (as of 2026), roughly half what the same price costs in Toronto.
